I am fascinated by “The Vikings” on the History Channel. The hero is a gung-ho guy named Ragnar. Ragnar is an “intrapreneur.” An intrapreneur is an employee who shows qualities of an entrepreneur: has lots of initiative and creativity, is a risk taker, is opinionated, thinks outside the box. You would think most managers would be thrilled with an employee like this, but unfortunately some feel threatened. This sure is the case with Ragnar’s boss, Earl Haraldson!

When a company stops moving forward with a candidate in the recruiting process, the candidate may wonder where they could have gone wrong. They stayed up all night revising their resume, polishing their cover letter, cleaning up their social media networks and making sure their references were lined up. So why didn’t they make the next round?  Here are a few secrets to the interview process that can make or break your chances of advancing to the next round:

1. Read directions! If the recruiter asks for a writing sample in professional business format and to email it by a certain day and time, make sure to follow the recruiter’s instructions carefully. Recruiters don’t just ask candidates to write in professional business format because it sounds fancy. We want to know if you know what that is, or at least if you can use the Internet and Word templates to learn it.

There are several reasons why people choose to work as freelancers. If you’ve been freelancing for a while, you may be doing this as your full time occupation, because you’re interested in making money between one corporate position and another, or because you’d like to work part time while also focusing on other projects.

But as experienced freelancers already know, full time job opportunities are likely to come your way now and then as you handle projects for your clients. And if you decide to pursue one of these opportunities and are called in for an interview, you’ll want to use your freelancing background to your advantage.
