Are You a Human creates simple, intuitive games that websites use to verify that their visitors are real people. These games, called PlayThrus, replace obnoxious text based CAPTCHA verification tools that infuriate users and decrease submission rates. PlayThru is the fun, easy, more effective way to stop spam without driving users crazy. Fight bots with fun!

Describe your company in one sentence:
We make simple, intuitive games that replace obnoxious CAPTCHAs.
What is the work environment like?
Awesome. I love our team; we’ve got a group of smart, creative people dedicated to ridding the world of CAPTCHAs. Our office in the Madison Theater building in downtown Detroit is amazing with great views and a perfect summer roof. It’s great to be in the same building with other exciting startups. There are also lots of Nerf darts flying around.
What is a typical day like?
This is a trick question. We have scrum calls every morning and it goes all over from there. It really depends what the priority is at the moment.
What is your favorite thing about your company?
I love building a tool that makes the Internet easier for people. Taking something that is universally scorned and replacing it with a positive experience is incredibly rewarding.
How did you get into this field?
I met my Co-Founders Tyler and Ben in graduate school. Tyler had this simple, amazing idea, and I loved working with him.
What characteristics do you look for in job seekers when hiring?
We look for someone who is smart, gets things done, and takes ownership of their work. You also have to get along well with us; we’ll be spending way too much time together.
Any advice for job seekers looking to work in your industry?
Show passion. Building a company takes dedicated, almost obsessed people. Most startups have mounds of work to do, so if you can show that passion, and are really good at something, there will be work for you.
Where do you see your company in five years?
That’s so far away its crazy to think about at our stage. I’m hoping we’ll be on tens of thousands of sites serving tens of millions of PlayThrus per month.
What are some of the things you do for fun when you are not working?
I love Detroit. Living here is absurdly fun. I love exploring the giant scavenger hunt that is the city.
How do you want to be remembered?
As a passionate Detroiter who built something cool.
